MMS for Water Purification: An Unexpected Wellness Tool

MMS releases chlorine dioxide when you activate it with an acid. That gas kills bacteria and breaks down some organics in water. People keep a small kit on hand for travel, camping, or questionable taps at home.

Materials you actually need

Start with 22.4% sodium chlorite solution and 4% hydrochloric acid or 50% citric acid. Use clean glass or HDPE dropper bottles. Keep a small measuring cup and a watch with a second hand. Store everything away from light and heat.

Mixing a batch for 1 liter

  1. Fill a clean bottle with 1 liter of the water you want to treat.
  2. Add 3 drops of MMS and 3 drops of activator for clear water, or 6 drops of each for cloudy or highly suspect water.
  3. Cap and swirl gently for 30 seconds.
  4. Wait 3 minutes for the reaction to finish and the smell to settle.
  5. Cap again and let it sit another 20-30 minutes before drinking.

Real situations and doses

  • Hotel sink in a new city: 3 drops per liter, wait 30 minutes.
  • Stream water on a day hike: 6 drops per liter plus a quick pre-filter through a bandana.
  • Rain barrel for garden use: 8 drops per 5 liters, no wait time needed if plants only.
  • Emergency stored water that smells off: 6 drops per liter, then taste after an hour and repeat once if needed.

Quick checks after treatment

Observation What it means Next step
Light chlorine smell Normal residual Ready to drink
No smell at all after 30 min Dose may have been low Add 2 more drops and wait
Strong bleach odor that lingers Too much activated Let it air out uncovered for 10 minutes
Cloudiness remains Heavy sediment Pre-filter or settle first next time

Daily adjustments that work

If the water tastes flat after treatment, pour it between two containers a few times. In very cold water the reaction slows, so give it an extra 10 minutes. When you travel often, pre-mix a small activated stock in a dropper bottle and use 1 ml per liter instead of counting drops each time.
